When I first became a stay at home mom, I wanted to find a way to make some extra spending money. It was the first time in my life that I wasn’t either in school or working outside the house. My passion is writing, and sure enough, in today’s digital age, there’s no shortage of people looking for writers.

I eventually found Upwork (then known as Elance) and LOVED the format. You basically search through many different gigs and apply to the ones that you’re qualified to do and that appeal to you. These can be writing, editing, graphic design, web developing, data entry, translation and more! Here’s a list of categories Upwork currently has (not shown: Accounting and Consulting). And within each category there are many subcategories

And within each category is many subcategories, or specializations. For example, below you’ll see the subcategories for the Design and Creative category. To see all categories and subcategories in detail, go to this link.

You don’t have to specialize in just one thing. For example, I specialize in content writing, copywriting, and editing and proofreading.

After deciding what you’d like to do, you’ll make your profile, and from there, you can start applying to jobs. You are given a certain number of “Connects” which you can use to apply to jobs. Depending on how much the job pays, it will cost a certain number of connects to apply to any given job. Of course, I have tons of tips for writing a professional looking profile, and writing winning proposals!

If you need any help getting started with Upwork, sign up for updates on my site. I’ll be posting many more Upwork blog posts in the coming days and weeks!

If you’re trying to get a freelance career started, try signing up for Fiverr too.
